Preparing for Laser Tattoo Removal: Before, During & After Each Session

Everything to do before your first laser tattoo removal session, what happens during the appointment, and how to care for the skin afterward.

Laser tattoo removal is a series, not a single appointment, and the fading you achieve depends heavily on how the skin is prepared and cared for around each session. Small habits in the days before and after a visit protect both the skin's safety and how effectively the ink breaks down. This guide walks through what to do before your first session, what happens in the treatment room, and how to care for the area between visits so each step builds toward clearer fading.

Four to Six Weeks Before: Sun and Skin Health

In a sunny climate like Homestead and South Miami-Dade, sun exposure is the most common reason a session is postponed. Avoid purposeful tanning — indoor or outdoor — for at least four weeks before each appointment, and apply a broad-spectrum mineral SPF 30+ daily to the tattooed area. Tanned or sunburned skin raises the risk of the laser affecting skin pigment instead of ink, which can cause burns or pigmentation changes. If you arrive with an active sunburn, we reschedule rather than treat compromised skin.

General skin health also matters. Keep the area moisturized and hydrated in the weeks leading up; a well-hydrated, healthy skin barrier responds better and recovers faster. Avoid new skincare actives that could sensitize the skin in the week before.

The Day of Your Appointment

  • Clean the area with a gentle cleanser and arrive with no lotions, oils, or cosmetics on the tattoo.
  • Shave the area only if there is dense hair directly over the tattoo, since hair can interfere with the laser's contact. We can advise on this at consultation.
  • Skip exfoliating acids and retinoids for 48 hours beforehand to keep the skin barrier calm.
  • Wear loose clothing that does not rub the treatment zone, especially for tattoos on the waist, ankle, or other friction points.
  • Stay hydrated and eat beforehand — sessions are more comfortable when you are well-rested and nourished.

What Happens During the Session

Your appointment begins with a brief review of the tattoo and your skin's current state. You and the esthetician both put on protective eyewear — required for every laser session. The tattoo is cleaned, and a cooling gel may be applied. The laser handpiece is then guided over the tattoo, delivering rapid pulses of light.

The sensation is usually described as quick, snapping snaps with warmth, often compared to a rubber band flicking the skin or to the feeling of getting the tattoo itself. Each pulse is brief, and we work at your comfort, pausing as needed. After the passes are complete, a soothing post-treatment product is applied, and the area is covered with a protective dressing if appropriate. Depending on the tattoo size, a session can take anywhere from a few minutes to over an hour.

Immediate Aftercare: The First 24–72 Hours

The treated area often looks red and slightly swollen, similar to a mild sunburn, and may develop small blisters or light scabbing as the skin reacts — this is part of the normal clearing response. Keep the area clean and dry, apply a thin layer of the recommended healing ointment, and do not pick at blisters or scabs, which can cause scarring. Avoid hot showers, saunas, swimming pools, and intense workouts for 48 to 72 hours to prevent infection and added heat.

Ongoing Aftercare Between Sessions

Daily sun protection is essential during a removal series. UV exposure between sessions raises the chance of pigmentation changes and can slow the clearing process. Keep the area moisturized, let any scabbing heal naturally, and avoid retinoids or exfoliants over the treated zone until it is fully healed. Sessions are spaced six to eight weeks apart to allow the body to clear the fragmented ink, so patience between visits is part of the process.

If you notice anything unusual — prolonged redness, signs of infection, or unexpected pigment changes — contact us before your next session. Curious about how a series is structured? Explore our laser treatment options and request an appointment to put a plan together.
