Preparing for Laser Hair Removal: Before, During & After Each Session
Everything to do before your first laser hair removal session, what happens during the appointment, and how to care for the skin afterward.
Laser hair removal is a series, not a single event, and the results you get depend heavily on how you prepare for each session and how you treat the skin between them. Small habits in the days before and after an appointment protect the follicle's response and the skin's safety. This guide walks through what to do before your first visit, what happens in the treatment room, and how to care for the area afterward so each session in your plan builds toward smoother, lasting reduction.
Four to Six Weeks Before: Stop Other Hair Removal Methods
The laser needs the hair's root to target, so any method that pulls hair from the follicle has to stop well in advance. Discontinue waxing, sugaring, tweezing, threading, and depilatory creams at least four to six weeks before your first session. Shaving is fine and encouraged, because shaving cuts hair at the surface while leaving the follicle intact.
Two Weeks Before: Sun and Tanning
In a sunny climate like Homestead and South Miami-Dade, sun exposure is the most common reason a session gets postponed. Avoid purposeful tanning — indoor or outdoor — for at least two weeks before each appointment, and apply a broad-spectrum mineral SPF 30+ daily to the areas you plan to treat. Tanned or sunburned skin increases the risk of the laser absorbing into the skin's pigment rather than the hair's, which can cause burns or pigmentation changes. If you arrive with an active sunburn, we will reschedule rather than risk treating compromised skin.
The Day of Your Appointment
- Shave the treatment area the morning of, or the night before. A close shave lets the laser energy focus on the follicle beneath the skin instead of burning surface hair.
- Skip lotions, deodorant, and makeup on the area to be treated so nothing interferes with the laser's contact or the cooling gel.
- Avoid exfoliating acids (glycolic, salicylic, retinol) for 48 hours beforehand to keep the skin barrier calm.
- Arrive with clean, dry skin and wear loose clothing that does not rub the treatment zone.
What Happens During the Session
Your appointment begins with a brief review of the area and your skin's current state. You and the esthetician will both put on protective eyewear — required for every laser session. A cooling gel is applied, and the laser handpiece is moved systematically across the treatment zone. You will feel quick, snapping sensations with warmth as each pulse targets the follicles; the built-in cooling tip soothes the surface between pulses.
Depending on the area, a session can last anywhere from a few minutes for an upper lip to closer to an hour for a full back or full legs. We work at your comfort and pause as needed. After the passes are complete, a soothing, hydrating post-treatment product and SPF are applied.
Immediate Aftercare: The First 24–48 Hours
The treated area may look pink and feel mildly warm, similar to a light sunburn. Cool compresses and a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer help. Avoid anything that adds heat or friction — skip hot showers, saunas, hot tubs, intense workouts, and exfoliating products for 24 to 48 hours. Do not pluck or wax between sessions; shaving is the only hair removal method to use during your series.
Ongoing Aftercare Between Sessions
Daily sun protection is the single most important habit during a laser series. UV exposure between sessions raises the chance of pigmentation changes and can reset progress on recently treated follicles. Keep the skin moisturized, continue shaving as needed, and let any shedding hair fall out naturally rather than pulling it. If you notice anything unusual — prolonged redness, blistering, or pigment shifts — contact us before your next session.
